The Spadoni College of Education (SCOE) of Coastal Carolina University cordially invites you to attend the Fall 2012 Education Forum titled “Literacy: The Heart of the Community.”  With the adoption of the Common Core Standards and continued reliance on high stakes tests to measure the preparedness of students entering college and beginning their careers, the purpose of this forum is to discuss the various types of literacies we use throughout our lifetimes and to explore the role of education in supporting our development of these literacies.  Specifically, this fall forum will focus on the following four themes:

  1. Literacy for a Functional Society
  2. Literacy to Build Human Capital
  3. Literacy Enriches Your Life
  4. Literacy as Empowerment

By continuing the SCOE’s Education Forum Series with these topics, we will launch a year-long conversation about education, literacy and achievement. As a valued member of our community and a key stakeholder to the impact of the quality of education in our state, we would be honored to have you join us for this important discussion. (Please RSVP below!)  The SCOE’s fall 2012 Educational Forum will take place on November 27, 2012, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the Kline Hospitality Suite located in Coastal Carolina University’s Brooks Stadium.  If you have any questions about this event, please feel free to contact Todd Cherner, assistant professor of education, at tcherner@coastal.edu or 843-234-3415.

We thank you in advance for your support and look forward to seeing you in November.  Attached is additional informational about the forum.  Assistance in disseminating this information would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Todd Cherner, Ph.D.
