Education majors who are members of the Spadoni College of Education Student South Carolina Education Association (S-SCEA) planned and successfully conducted a community literacy event entitled, “Reading Around the Globe.” The students and SCOE faculty members worked alongside teachers of the Horry County Education Association unit under the direction of Julianna Brown in sponsoring the fun literacy day.  The students, led by President, Dana Frangipane, an elementary education major, and officers Candace Hamilton (VP), Jennifer Floyd (Treasurer), and Whitney Stalvey (Secretary) wrote a grant to help fund the cost of the event, which was held on Thursday evening, March 1 in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.

The family literacy night was held at Waccamaw Elementary School in Conway, South Carolina and offered free books, games, a digital story station, read aloud presentations by distinguished community members, parental activities, a D.J., music and dancing.  Over 300 parents, students, and teachers attended the event designed to promote literacy.  The “Reading Around the Globe” event is another example of the ways the Spadoni College of Education is partnering with P-16 schools in our local community.
